If you’ve always considered yourself a bit of a daredevil and have dreamt of travelling to Spain to run with the bulls, you’re in luck. You don’t need a transatlantic plane ticket to get the thrill of the chase, or rather, the thrill of being chased. The 12th annual New Orleans Running of the Bulls takes place on July 14th.
 
Of course, there’s no real threat of imminent death in this race, but it’s just as heart pounding and lively. The bulls here are actually the Big Easy Roller Derby Girls dressed as the menacing bovines. Runners wear traditional Spanish gear and try to outrun the ‘bulls’ who are on rollerblades and wielding plastic bats.
 
The event runs for the entire weekend. On July 13th the excitement starts building with a celebration at Seven Three Distillery. Cocktails, food, auction and much more will get the crowd pumped up for the next day’s event. On the 14th the main event takes place. El Encierro, or the running of the bulls, begins bright and early with the procession at 7:15 am at the Sugar Mill. The race gets underway at 8 am and is over by about 8:15 am. Downtown New Orleans plays host to additional festivities after the race.
 
Even once the race is over, there is more fun to be had. On Sunday there is a recovery brunch, burlesque show, and an Ernest Hemingway (with the theme being Hemingway in Cuba) lookalike contest.
 
Registration for the New Orleans Running of the Bulls is currently open and selling out fast. Tickets can be purchased for any and all of the weekend events Watching the race is free to the public.
