Celebrate the ‘Maid of Orleans’ at the Krewe Joan of Arc Parade

Recurring annually on January 6, the Krewe Joan of Arc Parade honors the unofficial patron saint of the city (or the Maid of Orleans, as she is otherwise known). Held on her birthday, Joan of Arc’s special parade is an event to delight the whole family.

The parade gets underway at 7 pm at the corner of Bienville and North Front Street. It works its way for 3 blocks down Bienville and then turns onto Charles Street. It continues on Ursuline and then onto Decatur. The procession concludes at Washington Artillery Park.

It’s important to note that this is more than just a parade. There are plenty of fun stops along the way. There are royalty toasts at the New Orleans Collection Williams Foundation Building. There is also a sword blessing ceremony at Saint Louis Cathedral. Of course, there is a stop at the statue of Joan of Arc for a heartfelt singing of ‘Happy Birthday’. A king cake ceremony is held to wrap up the event in Washington Artillery Park.

This event is free to attend. Expect to see plenty of medieval costumes and traditions, French culture and tons of heritage, and Joan of Arc herself clothed in a white robe and breastplate. Joan receives her sword after it’s blessed partway through the parade. Each year ‘Joan’ is chosen from a student competition.

Those who attend the parade often dress in gold to represent the statue of Joan that was given to the city by France in the 1950s.
